Badgers Just Shy of Top Ten

by Bart Winkler | February 9th, 2010

After a nice week of beating up on teams from our neighbors to the East, the Badgers success was acknowledged in the latest college basketball rankings. Despite beating Michigan State this week, Wisconsin still trails behind the Spartans in the polls, although not by much. In the AP Poll, the Badgers come in at #11, one spot behind Michigan State. In the ESPN/USA Today Poll, they are a few more spots back coming in at #13.

Things shouldn’t be too difficult for the Badgers this week, but it’s important that they don’t let one of their next two games become a letdown. First up is Illinois, a team that at 16-8 isn’t ranked but is receiving votes, after that it’s the 9-13 Indiana Hoosiers. Both of these games should be victories, as they are both home games for Wisconsin. Actually, the worst of the Badgers Big Ten schedule is behind them, if they keep winning games and get a little help ahead of them, they still have a chance to win the Big Ten regular season.
As for the other team we (kind of) follow, they are getting some attention as well. Marquette has garnered a whopping ten votes in the Associated Press poll, but progress is progress. Not much room for them to improve though, as they only have South Florida and that isn’t until Saturday night.
