(BadgerChatters Newswire) -Bo Ryan was stressing to his University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team that it has to expect the unexpected during preseason basketball tournaments.
The UW coach was prophetic as the Badgers fought off foul problems that forced Ryan to go deep to his bench and still earned a 65-61 victory over Arizona on Monday night in a first-round game at the Maui Invitational.
Trevon Hughes scored 24 points to lead the Wisconsin Badgers to victory over the Arizona Wildcats.
Hughes also grabbed seven boards and recorded five steals for Wisconsin (3-0), while Keaton Nankivil added 12 points and eight rebounds in the win. Jason Bohannon also contributed to the victory, netting 10 points for the Badgers.
Derrick Williams lead the way for Arizona (2-1), scoring 25 points, while pulling down eight caroms. Nic Wise tallied 13 points in the loss, while Jamelle Horne grabbed a game-high 11 boards.
The Badgers held Arizona to a lackluster 23.8 percent shooting effort from the field in the first half and went into the break with a 31-23 advantage.
Wisconsin almost coughed up the lead in the second half by shooting 29.0 percent from the floor, but the team made 15-of-24 foul shots in the final 20 minutes en route to the four-point win.
The Badgers scored 18 points off 14 Arizona turnovers, while the Wildcats posted just six points off of eight Wisconsin miscues.
The Badgers will now move on to the winner’s bracket of the semifinal round where they will battle the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Tuesday.
